Bishop's Stortford Town Council Tax to reduce in 2009/2010

At the January 2009 meeting of Bishop’s Stortford Town Council, the Conservative group secured a reduced budget for the financial year 2009/2010. This means that for the second year running, Conservative controlled Bishop's Stortford Town Council has reduced their share of the council tax.

Thanks to the hard work and efficiencies gained by the Town Council staff, the Conservatives managed to present a budget of £1,119,885 - a reduction of over £32,000 on this year. This means that band D properties in Bishop’s Stortford will see the Town Council share go down by 1.8%

Councillor John Wyllie, Chairman of the Finance commitee stated "Whilst I accept that this is only a small reduction, we feel it is important to do what we can to reduce the burden on the tax payer, especially during these tough economic times.

Once again Councillor Philip Demonti and the staff at the Rhodes Arts Complex have done sterling work in reducing their grant requirements. With the excellent shows that Rhodes are now putting on as well as allowing free admission to the museum, the staff at Rhodes are delivering a great service on a very tight budget.

The Tourist Information Centre is set to relocate to the Town Centre, this move should help promote the excellent service provided by the staff to residents and visitors alike. Hopefully this in turn will help the hard pressed businesses in the town, in this difficult financial time."

It was sad to see that the Bishop's Stortford Liberal Democrat group didn’t feel they could vote for the savings, but then it had only been a few weeks before that they pressed for Councillor's allowances to be included in the budget. Thankfully this was voted down by the Conservatives.

Bishop's Stortford Conservatives are commited to investing in services for a better future, whilst ensuring the tax payer gets value for money!
